FAA Timeline
- 1926 - Air Commerce Act: President Calvin Coolidge signed into law the first Federal legislation regulating civil aeronautics.
- 1938 - The Civil Aeronautics Act: Transferred Federal civil aviation responsibilities from the Commerce Department to a new independent agency, the Civil Aeronautics Authority (CAA).
- 1958 - The Federal Aviation Act of 1958: Transferred CAA's functions to a new independent body, the Federal Aviation Agency (FAA).
- 1967 - The Department of Transportation (DOT) began full operations. The FAA became one of several organizations within the DOT and received a new name, the Federal Aviation Administration.
- 1970 - The Airport and Airway Development Act of 1970 placed the agency in charge of a new airport aid program funded by a special aviation trust fund.
- 1981 - The PATCO Strike: As the result of an illegal strike in August 1981, the government dismissed 11,359 strike participants and decertified the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization.
- 2001 - The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) succeeded the FAA as the agency with primary responsibility for civil aviation security.
