Guide Note:The Earth Day Flag was designed by John McConnell in 1970; he was inspired by the first photographs of the Earth taken during the U.S. Apollo Ten space mission in 1969. The flag gained world wide recognition by association with anthropologist Margaret Mead. Dr. Mead carried what she called "the flag for all people" with her wherever she appeared from 1969 until her death in 1977. This symbol of Earth Day has been presented to US Presidents as well as foreign leaders from many other countries. Today these flags can be bought by the general public to have them fly proudly in their homes and yards.
