Dante is a powerful half-demon/half-human warrior, who runs a business of sorts hunting creatures of hell, seeking revenge for the death of his family. When a mysterious girl named Trish visits Dante at his shop and tells him that Mundus—the demon emperor—is building his power, Dante rushes to his castle in pursuit. It becomes revealed that Dante believes Emperor Mundus is personally responsible for the death for his brother and mother. However, the revenge Dante has planned becomes more complex when a powerful demon attacks Dante, who is eventually revealed to be Dante's twin brother Virgil. The two continue to fight, and Dante finally defeats Virgil, awarding him their fathers' sword, called “Sparda.” When Trish is taken captive by Mundus, Dante takes his father's sword and sets out to rescue Trish and destroy Mundus.
