Laps 51-100

  • LAP 100: We've reached the halfway point of the race and here's our Top 10: Kyle Busch, Newman, Biffle, Hamlin, Kenseth, Gordon, Ragan, Kurt Busch, Mears, and Dale Jr.
  • LAP 98: Halfway leader has not won the race since 1992 - as Gordon and Newman jump Kurt Busch into top 3
  • LAP 95: Approaching the halfway mark, and the big story so far has been the lack of caution flags (just 1 yellow for 3 laps) and no crashes - 180MPH average speed with 20 lead changes and 9 different leaders - 36 cars on the lead lap
  • LAP 94: Kyle jumps ahead of Kurt as the "Busch" race at the front gets interesting...
  • LAP 92: Ryan Newman making a big move, he's up to 5th, and Matt Kenseth also running hard...Dale Jr. back up to 8th
  • LAP 90: A lot of bunching together and Martin turns out to need all 4 tires replaced because ran over track debris... 4 wide on the track!!!!
  • LAP 89: Kurt Busch still leads baby brother Kyle by 0.13 seconds, but Kurt didn't come in for new tires during yellow flag pit stop, and he's sliding a little bit...
  • LAP 87: Dale Jr. needs a new ball shifter with "Duct Tape" - $5.00 tape on a multi-million dollar car...that's NASCAR...
  • LAP 86: Mark Martin loses the front right tire and has to come off - it happened right at the edge of pit row so it made it easy for him to come off, Martin has never won the 500...
  • LAP 84: FOX "Cranks it up" and the new FOX Gopher Cam adds to it by showing just how fast the cars are going on screen with the new camera angles...Kurt Busch - who started at back of the pack - takes the lead
  • LAP 83: next 5 under yellow are Kenseth, Biffle, Edwards, Truex Jr., and Vickers, whch shows that winning a race isn't just about the driver but the crew getting them out qickly as well... BACK TO GREEN
  • LAP 82: Sorenson, the Busch brothers, Gordon and Hmlin are the Top 5 under yellow...
  • LAP 81: Still under yellow, and only 2 drivers (Petty and Nemechek) out of the race - Reed Sorenson was the only driver that didn't come in, so he has the lead under yellow
  • LAP 80: And there it is, our first Yellow Flag of the day... another pit stop for all the drivers - right side tire changes and fuel top off mostly...
  • LAP 78: Still no yellow flags means this race could be fastest in 500 history... we're only 1 hour into the race and we're about 40% done with the race...usually only reaching 50 laps in an hour in a typical race... cars are handling the track well, with most cars that cam in on last pit just getting 4 tires and gas
  • LAP 76: Kyle Busch is back up front, followed by Gordon, Hamlin, Kenseth, and Greg Biffle in 5th, followed by Kahne, Dale Jr., Saler, Hornish, and Edwards
  • LAP 75: More green flag pit stops...Sorenson and Newman had a brief lead...
  • Busch and Hamlin now coming into the pits together... tightening on the air pressure and 4 tires + fuel
  • LAP 73: Green flag pit stops being taken by several cars, including many of the leaders
  • LAP 71: Casey Mears comes to pit row to take 4 new tires
  • LAP 68: Speeds are still top 180 MPH on average, and one the reasons pit stops are being talked about is gasoline in the cars... Elliott Sadler in for a pit stop, looks like he dragged the wall in the corner
  • LAP 65: Denny Hamlin has lead the most laps so far... still no yellow flags yet, which is odd because usually you get one by now, so that will affect some of the race crews strategies
  • LAP 64: Kyle Busch still leads but almost side-swiped Denny Hamlin off the corner
  • LAP 62: John Andretti comes in for 4 new tires, and gets a push out of the pit area...Mark Martin in 13th and Kevin Harvick 22nd with Waltrip back to 24th
  • LAP 60: Gordon and Dale Jr. just staying consistent with their cars in the 3rd and 4th positions... Ryan Newman in 16th, while Dale Jarrett, in his final 500, is 22ndHornish and Petty in the pits, while Nemechek is out of the race in the garage...
  • LAP 56: Kyle Busch, a.k.a. "Rowdy", has the lead. Track is fast and tires are a big concern in pit row as many cars will come in for first full stop soon...
  • LAP 55: Top 3 cars have seperation from the next group of 10-12 cars, but its only about a 1 second gap
  • LAP 53: All 3 Toyotas are still in Top 15, with top 2 in Hamlin and Busch, and Stewart won the Naionwide race ysterday.

Laps 1-50

  • LAP 50: At the quarter pole of the race, still no yellow flags - it's been a clean race with no 'swapping paint' by anyone so far. Here's the Top 5: Hamlin, Kyle Busch, Gordon, Dale Jr., and Kenseth
  • LAP 47: Jeff Gordon takes the lead back from Busch...Matt Kenseth back up to 5th, and Denny Hamlin retakes the lead
  • LAP 44: Kyle Busch has the lead last 3 laps, running terrific in the Toyota, average 186 MPH... tire blisters are a concern for several drivers...
  • LAP 40: 1/5 of the race over...Jeff Gordon takes the lead, with Kyle Busch right on him, followed by Hamlin, Dale Jr., and Kenseth...Joe Nemechek is out of the race
  • LAP 37: Now the leaders are in...
  • LAP 36: Pit row action picking up, about the half the drivers have come in for just loosening or tightening of equipment, not a full blown pit stop
  • LAP 34: Early pit stops for early vibrations of specific cars, but none of the leaders are in yet
  • LAP 28: Hamlin and Kyle Busch, Toyotas running 1-2 with Stewart in 11th, followed by 3 Chevrolets in Gordon, Dale Jr., and Johnson... Hornish is 6th in a Dodge, while Edwards has the top Ford in 9th
  • LAP 25: No Yellow Flags so far, so we should see an early pit stop... cars are still using more of the high side of the track so far
  • LAP 24: Hamlin still leading, with Gordon close behind
  • LAP 22: Kyle Busch moving up quickly into 4th
  • LAP 20: Top 10: Hamlin, Gordon, Dale Jr., Johnson, Kle Busch, Hornish, Mears, Kahne, Edwards, an Martin

  • LAP 15: Kahne up to 4th, and Dale Jr. running a consistent 5th
  • LAP 14: Sam Hornish, former Indy 500 winner, showing a great start in 8th
  • LAP 12: Stewart and Hamlin still leading the pack with Gordon close behind talking to his crew about the tightness of the car...Commentary: FOX needs to do what ABC does with the Indy 500 and split screen duing commercials so you don't miss the action on TV
  • LAP 10: 5% of the race complete, weather is perfect, so let's set the Top 10 right now: Stewart, Hamlin, Gordon, Johnson, Kahne, Sorenson, Earnhardt, Mears, Hornish, and Edwards
  • LAP 8: Engines were a concern all week for the crews...Stewart and Hamlin still 1-2 at the front
  • LAP 7: Kevin Harvick letting crew know his engine is reading trouble and may need to come in
  • LAP 6: Tony Stewart takes the lead in his Toyota, currently 1-2 Toyotas
  • LAP 4: 188 MPH average at the top... Denny Hamlin has the lead, first time a Toyota has the lead in a 500 race
  • LAP 3: cars are still bunched together and staying up on the outer edge of the track so far - Johnson takes the lead with Hamlin close behind
  • LAP 1: Michael Waltrip jumps ahead of Jimmy Johnson on back stretch
  • Race starts in moments - McMurray and Franchitti drop to back of pack because of using the back-up cars..."Boogity Boggity Boogity! Let's go racing!"
