While campaigning in June of 1992, Dan Quayle was a guest at a spelling bee in Trenton, New Jersey. After a student correctly spelled "potato," Quayle told him that there should be an "e" at the end. In his memoir Standing Firm, Quayle wrote that the incident "was more than a gaffe. It was a 'defining moment' of the worst imaginable kind. I can't overstate how discouraging and exasperating the whole event was."3
