History

The first known Cornish Rex, named Kallibunker, was born July 21, 1950, in Cornwall, England. Unlike his litter mates—or any other cat his owner had ever seen—he possessed distinctive curly fur, a tall, thin frame and very large ears.² Kallibunker was later identified as a genetic mutation, and bred to produce similar cats (though other cats possessing the trait have also contributed to the gene pool). The Cornish Rex has been registered as a breed since 1962.¹
