What Is This Stuff
Cornbread stuffing is made of cornbread, spices, broth, vegetables, egg and seasonings. It may include oysters, chicken or other meats. In recent times cream of chicken or cream of celery soup has been added for creaminess.
Stuffing Vs Dressing
Some prefer to cook their cornbread stuffing inside their meat of choice, usually chicken or turkey. Others prefer the crisp top that only baking in the oven can do. If it is cooked in the bird it is called a stuffing, if it is cooked in the pan it is called a dressing.
Stuffing Safety
The temperature of stuffing and dressing is critical. Even if the turkey has reached the proper temperature of 180 degrees, the stuffing may not have begun the cooking process. The stuffing needs to reach a temperature of 165 degrees. At this temperature the stuffing will begin to kill the bacteria that can cause foodborne illnesses or food poisoning.2
