Ceramics

Historically, ceramics were shaped from mineral-rich clay that was then exposed to high temperatures to achieve a hardened, waterproof form. Modern ceramics may be made from a variety of synthetic and natural materials which are then fired in a kiln.

Ceramic pieces can be classified as fine art, decorative art, industrial art or applied (functional and everyday) art.

History

The art of ceramics developed independently among many prehistoric cultures and ancient ceramics have been discovered virtually worldwide. The Venus of Dolní Věstonice, a ceramic figure of a woman which was made between 27,000 and 31,000 years ago, is believed to be the oldest evidence of ceramics. The statue and several others like it were discovered in what is now the Czech Republic. Ceramics dating to around 10,000 B.C. have been recovered in both China and Japan.
