Calamari has been heavily popularized in Mediterranean cuisine, especially in Italy. The squid is most often fried quickly, simmered with tomatoes, onions or other vegetables. The squid is typically removed from the heat quickly to keep the meat tender.

Calamari is most often served raw in Korean dining rooms, though it can be cooked quickly in Korean Barbecue. The squid is typically served whole and cut up into smaller pieces for the table. The tentacles are eaten along with the body.

In mainland Asia, calamari is frequently grilled and served by street vendors.
