May was drafted 14th overall in the 1990 NHL draft by the Buffalo Sabres. He joined the Sabres in 1991 for his NHL debut and played with the franchise for six and a half seasons before he was traded to the Vancouver Canucks. On June 24, 2000, the Canucks sent May to the Phoenix Coyotes. In November of that same year, May was suspended by the league for 20 games after he slashed the face of Columbus Blue Jackets' player Steve Heinze. He joined the Coyotes for just over two seasons before he was sent back to the Canucks on March 11, 2003. May then signed with the Colorado Avalanche on August 5, 2005, and stayed with them until February 27, 2007, when he was traded to the Anaheim Ducks. Although May missed much of the 2006-07 season with a shoulder injury, he did re-join the team and helped them win the 2007 Stanley Cup Championship.
