Guide Note: Battlestar Galactica is a television show on the Sci-Fi Channel, starring Edward James Olmos. It is based on a show from 1978, created by Glen A. Larson.

The series begins with a three hour miniseries, in which the bulk of humanity has been annihilated by the "Cylons," a group of self-aware robots that man himself created. One of the only military ships to survive the attack is the Battlestar Galactica, a clunky old vessel with no computer network connections to the rest of the fleet. The Galactica is commanded by William Adama (played by Edward James Olmos, a veteran of the first cylon war who is about to retire.

After the Cylons' nuclear attack on the 12 Colonies, Commander Adama and the newly appointed President, Laura Roslin (Mary McDonnell), decide to lead the 50,000 or so remaining survivors across the galaxy to a fabled thirteenth human colony called Earth.

Throughout the course of their journey, Adama and his fleet are constantly being pursued and infiltrated by the Cylons, who we discover can now take human form.

In 2007, The Sci-Fi Channel aired a 2 hour special called, Battlestar Galactica Razor, which focuses on another ship called the "Battlestar Pegasus". A spinoff show called Caprica is also in development, which is about Adama's grandfather and the events leading up to the first Cylon war.
