Basenji is an ancient breed originating from Africa. They do not bark but may whine, howl or "yodel" which is a Basenji specific trait.¹ As a pet they are generally known to be inquisitive, highly intelligent, and at times mischievous, but form a strong and loyal bond to their owners.

The Basenji is a pure breed and is susceptible to various health issues common in all pure bred dogs. Those health problems include progressive retinal atrophy and hip dysplasia. The breed is especially susceptible to Falconi Syndrome, which are kidney problems.²

The Basenji is renowned as a hunting dog that doesn't bark.³The breed is generally considered an energetic, intelligent, demanding breed that likes to be challenged. They are not recommended around small children and pets.⁴ The American Kennel Club categorizes the dog as a hound and was officially recognized in 1990. ⁵
