Health Problems

The kelpie is considered a generally healthy breed, but like most pure bred dogs are susceptible to common health problems. The kelpie can suffer from health issues such as hip dysplasia, luxating patella, cerebellar abiotrophy. The kelpie is generally considered an energetic and intelligent dog that demands constand challenge and attention.

Sports and Activities

The Australian Kelpie was originally bred for outdoor work too demanding for the typical Border Collie.¹ The kelpie is traditionally muscular and has a coarse coat ideal for harsh weather. The breed now has two varieties.² The show kelpie was bred primarily for show competitions and exclusively as a pet, while the working kelpie is a hardy working dog raised for herding sheep, guarding livestock and protecting farms.³
