Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse is a British R&B/jazz singer whose soulful voice and smart songwriting have earned her international acclaim and whose personal struggles have turned her into a daily tabloid target.

2007 was Winehouse's breakout year in America, but the sultry, edgy jazz-pop songstress has been a star in her native England since Island Records released her debut in 2003.

Rehab

Known in the tabloids as much for her hard-partying social life as her music, Winehouse wrote her first American hit "Rehab" after rejecting her now-former management's suggestion that she receive treatment. After months of erratic behavior, Winehouse was eventually admitted into a rehabilitation clinic.

Arrests

Winehouse was arrested twice in 2007 and once in 2008.

Winehouse was arrested with husband Blake Fielder-Civil in Norway on October 17, 2007 for possession of marijuana and was released after paying a fine. On December 17, 2007, Winehouse was arrested again, this time on suspicion of perverting the course of justice in a case relating to her husband Blake Fielder-Civil.

The third arrest, on April 25, 2008, occurred after Winehouse allegedly head-butted a man who tried to hail her a cab. She was charged with assault.

Grammys

During her stint in rehab, it was reported that Winehouse met with officials to discuss obtaining a visa to perform at the 2008 Grammy Awards, where she was nominated in six categories. Her application was rejected by American officials. Though the decision was later overturned, it was too late for Winehouse to make the ceremony. She performed via satellite from a studio in England. She went on to collect awards for "Best New Artist," "Record of the Year," "Best Female Pop Vocal Solo Performance" and "Best Pop Vocal Album" for Back to Black.
