dog. They are generally considered powerful and aggressive, but loyal and affectionate with family members.

Health Problems
The Akita is a pure breed and is susceptible to various health issues common in all pure bred dogs. Those health problems include progressive retinal atrophy,hypothyroidism, and hip dysplasia.
Sports and Activities
Akitas are part of the working breed group. They are generally considered excellent guard dogs and loyal pets, but are not recommended around small children or other dogs.1 The Akita is renowned for its ability to hunt big game such as Elk, boar and even the 800 pound Yezo bear Bear.2
