On January 14, 2008, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates recommended sending an additional 3,200 troops to support the war in Afghanistan. Some of the additional troops would help fight Taliban forces in southern Afghanistan, while others would aid in the training of Afghani army and police forces.

NATO
According to the Pentagon, a lack of NATO support was a major factor in Gates' troop request. Military commanders in Afghanistan had determined that 7,500 additional troops were necessary for necessary security improvements.3
