800 Dollar MacBook
One of the hottest rumors surrounding the Apple October 14th MacBook event was the $800 MacBook. Leaked price sheets, allegedly originating with Apple retailers, listed price points starting at $800 for the new Mac laptops.1 Despite the speculation and hopes for such an announcement at the event, the price for the entry level MacBook was reduced to just $999.2

What would a sub-$1000 notebook mean to Apple's stocks?
If the rumor of an $800 MacBook is true, Apple's stock margins may fall to around 30%, according to financial analyst Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray. But, he adds, "investors would see the lack of redesigned, lower-priced Macs as a more significant negative than they would a 30 percent GM guide in the December quarter."4
