History of the Dog Show

The Westminster dog show first began in 1877. It was started by a group of hunters who would gather at the Westminster Hotel in Manhattan. They eventually created a kennel club in order to hold the dog show. The event originally lasted three to four days until 1941, when it moved to a two-day format. The show grew in popularity every year, becoming the largest all-breed dog show in 1905 with over 1700 dogs. Television coverage of the event began in 1948 and continues to this day.¹
