September 2005
- September 22: John Roberts was nominated as the 17th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court
- September 24: Hurricane Rita strikes the gulf coast of Texas and Louisiana dampening the rebuilding efforts of the earlier Hurricane Katrina disaster.
- September 25: The Irish Republican Army officially disarms and hands over all their weapons.
- September 27: Lynndie England was convicted by a military jury for her part in the Abu Ghraib Prison abuse controversy. She was later sentenced to three years in prison.
- September 28: House Majority Leader, Tom DeLay was indicted on the charge of conspiring to violate political fundraising laws.
- September 29: John Roberts was sworn in as America's 17th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
October 2005
- October 3: George W. Bush nominates Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court. Miers eventually withdrew after weeks of criticism. Samuel Alito eventually became the nominee on October 31.
